I mentioned this wonderful movie in my post titled, The Bechdel Test and Miss Representation. If you haven't seen it, do! If you have, double-do it.
"'The Company of Strangers' (US release title: 'Strangers in Good Company'; French title: 'Le Fabuleux gang des sept') is a Canadian film, released in 1990. It was directed by Cynthia Scott, and written by Scott, Sally Bochner, David Wilson and Gloria Demers. The film depicts eight women on a bus tour, who are stranded at an isolated cottage when the bus breaks down.
"Created in a genre defined as semi-documentary/semi-fiction, the film is not tightly scripted; the writers wrote a basic story outline but allowed the eight women to improvise their dialogue. Each of the women, all but one of whom were senior citizens, told stories from her own life. A major theme of the film is how the elderly women each face aging and mortality in their own way, and find the courage together to persevere." ~Wikipedia
If I were still dating, this movie would be a deal-breaker. Does my potential partner value women's life experiences? Is a film about old women as enjoyable as The Bucket List movie earning $175 million at the box office? If a potential mate got up and left the room during Strangers in Good Company, I'd lock the door behind him and thank Cynthia Scott for the litmus test.
If you're interested in this film, you can watch it on The WoN Cinema: In The Company of Strangers (USA release title: Strangers in Good Company). You can also watch it free HERE ; or, you can purchase it On NFB.ca or
at Amazon.com and encourage movie producers to make more films like this one!

Hi CZ, How are you!? I hope you're well. I'm sorry it's been so long since I visited. I saw your link on my dashboard today and said to myself, Get Over There and Say HI. And, as usual, such good timing. I'm going to visit my mom soon, and this looks like a great movie to umm, pass the time ;) I might watch it on your awesome WON Cinema tonight.
ReplyDeleteI guess in one way it is good I haven't been by, aye? Not thinking too much about the N b*** head lately. Sometimes, certain things remind me, but I just get a little nauseated. No pining or longing, thank goodness! Ginger helps with the nausea.
I'll be back soon, and that's a warning :)
With lots of hugs,
Michelle aka 'dogkisses'
Hi dogkisses!!
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see your screenname, I imagine a woman covered in red lipstick smooches.
I can fully understand why you don't hang out here all the time, though. Once you get through the dastardly aftermath of the N-relationship, you need a break from the misery.
And, if you hang out too long on narcissism blogs, you'll start diagnosing yourself. So, it's good to move forward with your life and focus on something beautiful, something wonderful about life. Like kissing dogs. ;-)
I hope you loved the movie as much as myself. So far, I’ve seen it three times and would watch it again if a girlfriend had time to watch it with me. I love this film.
With lots of hugs back,
CZ
