BlogDuggery Part Two: This Is Not Okay EVEN IF You're In Recovery

Reference Post: Part One of BlogDuggery

Dear dear recovery friends. As a woman who was taught to be self-effacing and to serve others while walking in the shadows, Appropriation of my work is STILL NOT Okay. I have dismissed plagiarism, understanding being my most lovable strength. I have felt compassion for people who were so stressed and frightened they copied-and-pasted in haste. People who were so disorganized from ptsd that they couldn't remember who wrote what when opening their desktop Pathology Folder. I have extended my sympathy to people who inadvertently forgot my name or lost my name or didn't copy that part of the article. However, it is time to stand up and say that intentional plagiarism needs to be stopped and when you find an obvious infraction such as the article below,  you need to "Show Up For Yourself."

When we're on a recovery journey, being of similar experiences and feelings, we will make connections at the same time other people are making the same connections. Our narcissistic relationship is unique AND it's not. You get what I mean. Our words and metaphors will be similar even though each of us is having an individual epiphany. It's not hard to imagine someone accusing YOU of stealing from THEM when in fact, you made the same connections after reading the same material and talking about the same experiences and insights. This is a good thing. It means I can write about my marriage, and other people feel like I'm writing about theirs. We are all learning together so there's room for doubt when one person professes to have had a brilliant idea before any of the other nine million readers studying narcissism.

In this case however, my good blogging friends would like me to stop being so understanding (i.e.: Don't Be a Schmuck). They've encouraged me to make an example of intentional plagiarism. I have copied an article as it was published on an abuse website. The irony of the site being about 'abuse' is not lost on me. Nor the irony of recommending this site, Escaping Abuse, as a resource for learning about pathological women. And then I find MY words without attribution, quotation marks, or even a conciliatory link on his sidebar. That is Not Okay. Even If You're In Recovery.

Now you can say his article is more readable than my weird yet studious article about Chickens in Oz: The Distortion Campaign.

Or the other article from which entire passages were culled: Gossip, Rumors and Smear Campaigns.

You can rationalize the plagiarism by saying there's so few sites written by men about pathological women that my little essays don't matter. Or you can tell me to keep my eye on the big picture and let it go for the sake of peace, harmony, and the wounded male ego. Those are the excuses I've used to keep writing openly. Sharing is a value of mine, a big part of my personality; but IF I value open sharing, I need to protect my work and yours too, and hers, and his, and everyone who contributes full-heartedly to our community.

Plagiarism is NOT Okay. Even If You're In Recovery!

I am not complaining about the author reading my articles and being so overcome with shock, awe, and inspiration that he wrote his own interpretation without giving me credit. To my knowledge, my article comparing the Smear Campaign to the Distortion Campaign was one of the first on the web. In a mutually respectful world, my name would have been listed in his footnotes. That is the LEAST we can do to show our appreciation.

For the most part, I have only included direct quotes. One afternoon is about all I could stand reading my own stuff. ha! I may have missed other quotes but that's quite enough I think, to make my point. Now you can decide for yourself: Intentional or unintentional plagiarism?

NOTE: I am not interested in blasting this guy to smithereens, bombing him with hate mail or anything of the sort. I am interested in protecting my work and putting a stop to stealing in the name of 'recovery.' Please do not hassle this man or attack his website. That is not the way to resolve the plagiarism problem...thanks.

When a relationship with an abuser ends, you can guarantee that it will be a messy affair. No matter if you left them, or if they left you, you can be assured that it will get worse before it gets better. As abuse is a learned behaviour, an abusive personality has developed a faulty model of behaviour from their own past. Part of that bad example is the ending of relationships, which are always explosive, drawn out and as destructive as their behaviour inside them. Either way, you will experience the “vilification” campaigns that are normal operating practice for them.

False accusations, distortion campaigns & smear campaigns are patterns of unwarranted or exaggerated criticisms which occur when an abusive or personality disordered individual tries to feel better about themselves by putting down someone else – usually a family member, spouse, partner, friend or colleague.

No Escape From The Inevitable

The first phase, in the aftermath, will be their attempts to re-establish control. This can be in the form of desperate cries for help, railroading their way back into your heart or affecting you emotionally enough that you will allow them back into your life.

You can be absolutely certain that you will be subjected to vicious treatment once you have extricated yourself from their harmful behaviour. Once the control cycle has reached its natural conclusion, you will be the victim of one of, if not both, several campaigns:

The “distortion” campaign (portraying a false/misleading take to others on what happened)

The smear campaign (deliberately making others think badly of you).

Unfortunately, it is not a case of “if”, it is a matter of WHEN. You will be forced to cope with the inevitable campaign.

Smearing Vs. Distortion

The difference between the two is that a distortion campaign is publicly misrepresenting the situation, whereas smearing is a personal attack on you designed to cause you personal loss. Both are deeply hurtful, painful, childish and extremely unhealthy. The choice of words emphasises that the campaign(s) employ lies, exaggerations, fictions, partial truths, and other reality-distortion techniques.

False accusations, distortion campaigns and smear campaigns can all be forms of “baiting”, projection or “proxy recruitment”.

Baiting is the practice of generating a provocative action or statement for the purpose of obtaining an angry, aggressive or emotional response from another person.

Projection is the act of attributing one’s own feelings or traits onto another person and imagining or believing that the other person has those same feelings or traits.

Proxy recruitment is a way of controlling or abusing another person by manipulating other people into unwittingly backing you up, speaking for you or “doing your dirty work” for you.

Both of these types of campaigns are designed to:

     Cover up her behaviour, and often shift the blame to you;
     Punish you for “harming” her in righteous outrage;
     Gain support from mutual friends and family;
Reinforce and/or restore her “flawless” image of herself.

Deliberate Character Assassination

These incidents will often destroy a person, their integrity, identity and all that is good about them. It often takes a person years to recover from a smear campaign once they've been attacked. By definition, these campaigns are efforts that abusers take to destroy a person’s name, their integrity, and their overall reputation:

If you've told her anything in confidence, she will violate this confidence; If you've done anything illegal, she will contact the authorities and tell them about your illegal doings; If you owe anyone money, have any outstanding bad blood, have done anything wrong, she will take this and use it against you.

The intent is to destroy your reputation and thereby destroy your relationships with family and friends, employers, doctors, teachers, therapists, and others. The intent may even be to force you to leave the community, put you in prison, or even kill you. As with so many things involving abusers and their typical inability to understand or respect boundaries, there really are no limits.

Punishment For Hurting Her

A smear campaign is a negative campaign where she will air all of your wrongdoings, in front of as many people as possible to make you look as bad as possible. Abusers tend to be “black and white” thinkers. They can claim to love you more than anyone else, but once they switch and you become an object of their rage, they want to destroy you at any cost. They feel so terrible that they want to ruin your life and are not afraid to do whatever it takes to ruin your life, hence feeling terrible like they do. Misery loves company.

It can be a frightening, humiliating and annoying experience when you discover that you are a victim of false accusations. When dealing with abusive people, the nature of the accusations may seem clever and manipulative or may seem illogical or absurd. However the reaction is usually is the same: there is an overwhelming urge to clear your name and set the record straight.

Personality-disordered people are often driven by an intense fear of abandonment. If you start to really abandon them (as in a divorce or trial separation) they will do anything to stop it. One approach to stopping your abandonment of them is to be nice again (“hoovering”), but another approach is to make leaving them so painful through the distortion/smearing that you will stop, come back and be a good victim again.
"When you tire of the emotional whiplash, they’ll turn on the charm. “Smooch!” You may believe they are reconciling, when in fact, they are hoovering."~Chickens in Oz: The Distortion Campaign
Sometimes, they will create situations involving the police. Once the police get there, they accuse you of some terrible thing. Of course, you’re upset anyway, and not usually in a good space to explain things calmly to the police at that point. If you are the man, many police officers will automatically assume you are at fault in any domestic incident.

Starting Wide & Early For Credibility

Distortion campaigns are often done behind the scenes against people who are or were related or emotionally close to her. She may start months or years before you are even aware of the campaign. For instance, the breakup of a relationship is often connected to a distortion campaign against a former partner.

The campaign may have started a long time before the breakup, to give her “justification” regarding what she is about to do to the target, be it kicking them out of a home, filing false domestic violence charges, running away with the children, stealing large quantities of joint money and property, or some other hostile actions. By the time you are aware of the distortions, people around her may have been hearing for a long time that you are some evil, horrible, cruel person as part of the distortion/smear campaign.

An Activity For The Whole Community

She is likely to make extreme false allegations, distortions, and varied lies to defame and harm you, her former partner, and other targets. She is also likely to involve many other people in the distortion campaign. Many are passive participants who will listen and believe her lies. Others become actively involved in spreading them further. You may find that there are dozens of people, many whom have never met him or her, who believe and repeat her lies.

A smear campaign is an attempt to malign someone’s character, credibility and reputation based on lies, half-truths and malicious rumours. Abusers distort facts with twisted conclusions, perceiving themselves as victims; seduce listeners with faked intimacy by sharing secrets; and are highly persuasive. So persuasive in fact, that they convince both themselves and others that their tales are true.
"A smear campaign is an attempt to malign someone’s character, credibility and reputation based on lies, half-truths and malicious rumors. Cluster B personality-types distort facts with twisted conclusions, perceiving themselves as victims, seduce listeners with faked intimacy by sharing secrets. AND, they are highly persuasive. So persuasive in fact that they convince both themselves and others that their rumor is true." ~Gossip, Rumors and Smear Campaigns
People silence their conscience and their intuition if the claims are sufficiently tantalising. Intuition takes a back seat when ego empowers itself through the spreading of lies. So an offensive tactic of the abuser is to use smear campaigns to malign, discredit, and reduce their victims (targets) to inferior beings—to strip them of power by derogating their character. This tactic also divides and conquers by pitting people against a supposed ‘foe’. Targets are stuck between a rock and a hard place, right where abusers like them to be: Damned if they defend themselves and damned if they don’t.

Targets are stuck between a rock and a hard place, right where narcissists like them to be: Damned if they defend themselves and damned if they don't."~Gossip, Rumors and Smear Campaigns
This process is never accomplished by a single person though. Smear campaigns require a mob to finish the job the abuser started and just like chickens in a coop, one hen is singled out and the others peck her to death. The originator, who selected the target for destruction, can sit back and enjoy the show while other hens commit an atrocity.

People believe what they want to believe and sometimes, they resist believing a nice person is as nice as she appears. They look for an angle, a hidden motive, and a reason to justify the hyper-vigilant feeling that everybody is out to get them. In the case of a pathological personality, other people are targeted to carry their projections rather than realising they’re initiating the distortion campaign themselves. They honestly believe their distortions are true. Abusive personalities cannot understand people being kind without having underhanded motives, simply because they suspect kindness to be a manipulative manoeuvre; since manipulation is how they do life and thus assume everyone else does likewise.

What Lies Do Abusers Tell?

Often they revolve around false claims of partner abuse, child abuse, perverse sexual behaviours, drug and substance abuse, mental illness, and criminal conduct. They tend to pick false accusations that are difficult to disprove. Although we supposedly live in a society in which people are “innocent until proven guilty”, the reality is that is not how people are treated. This is especially the case when accusations of sexual abuse, child abuse, and spousal abuse are involved.

The victims of the distortion campaign often are treated as pariahs or even criminals, assumed to be guilty without any evidence whatsoever.
"You will be treated like a pariah without any credible evidence whatsoever. Even by your so-called friends." ~Chickens in Oz: The Distortion Campaign
The perhaps surprising aspect of many of these defamatory statements is that they are not about you at all. Often abusers are aware at some level that they themselves are responsible for these bad behaviours. So instead of taking responsibility for their own problems, they blame them on others. This behaviour is known as “projection.”

For example, an emotionally and physically abusive woman will falsely accuse her male partner of abuse. A typical example might be a distortion such as blaming him for an incident of physical abuse. She may tell others that her boyfriend got angry at her, started yelling and screaming at her, and then slammed the door on her hand to break her finger. This might even be part of the truth. She’ll get a lot of sympathy, people will think bad things about her boyfriend, and she gains allies. That is, so long as nobody hears the full truth before they've been effectively brainwashed by her.

They are believed and seldom questioned because of their emotional intensity they exhibit while they repeat their lies.
"The pathological person is so convinced their cognitive distortions are true, that other people are eventually persuaded by their emotionally-evocative sincerity."~Chickens in Oz: The Distortion Campaign
Abusers have trouble knowing what the truth is. This is due to a combination of problems – sometimes they may experience cognitive dissociations in which they temporarily break from reality and may honestly experience reality completely differently from any observers, even video cameras will not agree with their version of reality. Other times, it may simply be from their extensive pathological lying and avoidance of the truth. As a result, they may repeat their vilifying lies in varying inconsistent versions. The inconsistencies won’t be simply of opinions; they will be of even basic facts. They may have such trouble keeping their lies straight that they will come up with multiple versions of events, often growing in severity, over repeated lies.

Version one might be that somebody raised a hand to strike them, version two might be the somebody was holding a knife, version three might be the somebody stabbed and just missed them, and so forth. The reality might be that nothing even happened. But reality does not matter to abusers, what matters is the ability to convince other people to take their sides and to protect themselves from “threats” such as being alone and being held accountable for their actions.

While you’re getting your bearings on what just happened, the police might show up at your door. Or the armed forces.

Or a band of vigilantes seeking revenge because you were so vicious to mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim. She has convinced the troops you’re Darth Vader, emperor of the Dark Side; maybe even persuading YOUR allies and friends that there is nothing redeemable about anything you’ve ever done. There is no ‘dusk’; no ‘dawn’ to your character…you are devoid of light like a soul-sucking soldier for Satan.

Her accusations are convincing because SHE is convinced she is the epitome of lightness-and-truth, the victim of your darkness-and-lies. Take note of the splitting, the harsh judgments, the lack of integration for both good and bad in people, her desire to overcome evil with her empire of flying monkeys. She chants her siren call to fellow fowls, who rescue her the way they wish someone would have rescued them.

Abusive characters defend cognitive distortions with vilifying lies, dissociations, destruction of your affiliations and bonds, accusations of mental illness, abuse, warning others about your online predation and calumny. This is easily accomplished if people perceive you as an evil authority, and the light-and-goodness-victim as a damsel in distress. This sort of thing happens frequently with women who cry abuse if public perceptions view men as strong and women as weak/vulnerable.

Be careful of anyone promoting victimization to garner your pity, sympathy, or trigger your rescuing tendencies. Real victims are too busy getting off the ground to think about inciting troops and capturing enemies.

Why Don’t People See Abusers Who Conduct Distortion Campaigns As The Liars They Are?

*Often they tell varying lies to different people who don’t “compare notes” and so don’t see what should be really obvious deception.

*Often their extreme emotional intensity makes people uncomfortable about asking questions. They tend to “just believe” because she is so intensely emotional that a casual untrained listener may fall for the lies. Untrained, uncritical listeners are particularly susceptible at being duped by their lies.

*Eventually, they may believe the lies so completely that even when confronted with evidence such as writings, photographs, recordings, 3rd party versions of events, and other evidence, they will refuse to accept that they were deluded into believing lies.

*Even many mental health care professionals will fall for the distortion campaign for a while, perhaps even a year or more. They get sucked into false sympathy and emotional alignment with the abusers rapidly. They fall for false stereotypes, such as “all men are abusers”, that abusers use to their advantage. Many mental health care providers have not kept up to date on reliable psychological research that amply documents that “men are abusers, women are victims” is not the truth. They may tend to be empathetic and take the statements of their patients at face value. Many of them also lack training in recognizing and treating personality disorders.

What Happens To People Who Are Victims Of Distortion Campaigns?

Here are some of the examples of the results:

They are alienated from their family and friends.
They lose contact with their children for months or even years.
They lose their jobs.
They spend tens of thousands of dollars or more fighting false accusations of the BP attacking them.
They have restraining orders placed upon them based upon false accusations.
They end up in prison due to false accusations.
They develop severe mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and others.
Some commit suicide.

Distortion campaigns can destroy people’s lives, even becoming lethal. This is particularly the case when the people around the victim do not understand how emotional abuse works. The victims of distortion campaigns need extensive support from others in order to survive such an experience without life-altering damage. Most people have trouble understanding how severe, damaging, unrelenting, and widespread these campaigns can be. And many of the victims of distortion campaigns consequently are left without effective support systems and suffer far worse damage than might have been the case if their friends and family understood they are being victimized by a female abuser.

The distortion campaign also tends to damage many people around her. Divorce situations in which the children are taught by an emotional abusive parent to hate the other parent based upon lies is very common. This is also known as “parental alienation”. Parental alienation can be so severe that it may permanently damage the relationship between the target parent and the children. It is important to keep in mind that parental alienation is a form of emotional child abuse. Women or others who do this to children are child abusers.

The damage does not stop with the immediate family. It tends to spill over into all relationships around the target as the target is accused of crimes, immoral and unethical behaviours, embarrassing incidents, and so forth. Your siblings, parents, new spouse, friends, and employers may all suffer serious damage from the distortion campaign. You may be unable to function normally, have insomnia and other sleep disorders, not be able to work normal hours or focus on work, and even feel afraid to been seen in public. This may be a time during which those around you have to band together to help you in a safe setting.

However, by doing so, your support system itself may become a new target for her. It is not unusual for abusers to proceed to attack people they see as helping you. As a way to protect everybody, it may be useful to minimize knowledge that she obtains about the people around you. You and those who support you may need to become very secretive about your lives in order to protect yourselves from ever-widening and intensifying attack by her.
"Victim chicks will ALWAYS collect allies. Your friends, preferably."~Gossip, Rumors and Smear Campaigns
The only thing you can do is try and minimize the damage.

First, don’t get caught in a situation where your actions can be misinterpreted. If you are going to get a child, take a witness with you. Don’t be with her by yourself. Don’t be with your children by yourself any more than you can help. Be with them in public places, have visitors over to your home. Don’t allow yourself to be accused of molestation or other unfounded charges simply because you don’t have witnesses. If you can enlist an exchange service to help with visitation, this can be extremely helpful. Avoiding any one on one contact with her is a good thing at this point in the relationship, and an exchange service can be very useful. Tell the exchange service what happened if your child injures herself. Don’t hide things.

If you think that your partner is abusive or personality-disordered — or even close to it — be sure to protect yourself from a potential smear campaign. Don’t tell her about anything that is potentially threatening or something that she can use in your life. In a normal relationship, you disclose anything, but emotional abusers can and will use this information against you. If you choose to be in such a relationship, you must protect yourself.

If you suspect you may be the object of a smear campaign, be sure to document everything. If you must, hire a solicitor to defend yourself as well– they will be impartial and can help you get out of trouble that you, while you are so emotionally involved in the relationship, cannot comprehend.

Chickens in Oz: the Distortion Campaign

Chickens in a Farmyard by Edgar Hunt, 1926

Cyberspace is an amazing place. Relationships are microwaved on high speed. It's as if deprivation of body language, emotional nuances, voice inflection, and intonation increases our imagination about 'who' the other person might be. There's a lot of projection going on in cyberspace. We can learn about ourselves, projections-and-all, when we form cyber-relationships. Some of that learning will hurt like hell and I can say absolutely and positively that my emotional reactions to cyber-betrayal mirrored my emotional reactions to betrayal in a face-to-face relationship. There wasn't any difference. In fact, I probably took it harder because the 'cyber friendship’ was limited to my head. And my head is a fantastical place with good witches and fairies and chubby gnomes welcoming everyone to Lollipop Land.

I didn't know that about myself until a cyber friend sneered, "I'll get you, my pretty, and keep my little dog, too!" That's when I ran to my closet for ruby slippers to take me home to Auntie Em before I’d be forced to douse my friend with a bucket of water to keep her from petitioning flying monkeys to finish the job she’d started. She was one excellent delegator. I oughta know.

Well, like I said earlier: cyberspace is an amazing place. What might remain between two chickens beak-to-beak becomes a virtual hen-pecking contest to see who has the most feathers when the keyboarding stops. Emotions choose sides and mob rule overrides logic. As long as everyone is picking and pecking together, no single chick is responsible until the Red Hen is standing naked, stripped of her elegant plume. Woe is me! I lost my tail feathers in a barnyard fight and it's taken five years to grow 'em back. But I wouldn't give up those five years for anything in the world, not even for a fifty-pound sack o’ hard white wheat. I learned valuable lessons about myself, about cyber-relationships, about golden eggs, and of course: a lot about fowl play.

Here's how it all came down according to my recollection of events and don't assume I'm projecting blame on anyone other than my own ignorance and incompetence:

I, the little Red Hen, was strutting around the chicken coop one day, checking nests to make certain there was enough straw to cushion golden eggs, when a puppy dog entered the yard. Not just any puppy dog either. A pedigreed puppy dog that several people had donated a week’s worth of groceries to buy so they could show a cyberfriend their gratitude. That didn’t set right with me you can be sure---playing on people’s tender mercies and charitable hearts! So I chased that damn dog out of the yard and set about resolving the mystery. Whose bright idea was it to let a dog loose in a henhouse anyway?

It didn’t take long to put two-and-two together and when everything ‘clicked’, I took action. That meant making the decision to act on logical reasoning putting principles ahead of personalities. What I discovered was hard to accept because a battle of conflicting wills had begun long before I knew another hen was vying for my position as head chicken. Emails flew to my in-tray like carrier pigeons bearing the bad news of a pending assassination…of my character. Animosity escalated. My cyber-character was in shreds and my reputation insufficient to protect me from allegations. This is a lot for a big chicken to absorb when she’s recovering from a rooster’s infidelity. (He promised to only cluck with me; and yes, it takes time admitting to being cuckolded when the undeniable fact is that I married a handsome clucker and what can a chubby hen expect?) Besides, getting back to cyber projection in particular, we imbue our friends with the same intentions, values, and beliefs as ourselves. Otherwise, why would we be friends in the first place if we didn't reflect similar goals and principles? The backstabbing had been done in secret while maintaining a smoochy relationship with me: the little Red Hen who believed what she saw and she only saw what she was allowed to see. Oh, those clever manipulators! They squawk with forked beaks!

Her behind-the-scenes campaign had forged alliances with disgruntled people. A flock of allies guaranteed a successful ambush since I was preoccupied baking bread to feed everyone including myself. I had my marching orders, you know and God bless my pea-pickin’ heart: I love to please. I’m telling you how busy I was, not as an excuse for my negligence but as a description as to why people-with-noses-to-the-grindstone don’t notice trouble brewing on the horizon.

In a recovery forum where people's emotions are looking for a reason to exist, there's a ready supply of frightened people who aren't sure whether to believe their own perceptions or the mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim. I don't fault people for being caught up in the confusion or wanting to defend a friend who insisted the Red Hen was...well, I'll leave the expletives and psychopathic diagnoses up to your imaginations, dear readers. Imagine the worst person you can and you’ll be close enough to what I’m thinking to say you read my mind.

The ambush escalated to death threats from people who ought have known better but were somehow convinced my kindness was a 'ruse'. That underneath my veneer of love for community was a ruthless woman motivated by power and control. Now you may think this sounds like a preposterous exaggeration but let me remind everyone that people’s fearful feelings were already there. People were looking for a reason for having those feelings and unfortunately, scapegoating is a handy outlet. When one person with authority is targeted, it’s hard to resist the chance to dump pent-up anger and aggression.

(Bring in the violins now…I’m imaging my story in episodes of black and white with a musical score rising and falling in concert with the drama.)

Alienated from my former support group (cyberspace is such an uncertain place, I get that), people I counted as friends went No Contact. They were terrified. One cyber-friend feared I’d track her down and kill her since she had told me where she lived. She heard right from the chicken’s mouth that I was a predator. Another woman I cared for deeply remained silent, accusing me of being a liar. She knew the real me behind my kind personality because mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim had called her on the phone and told her I was a cold-blooded liar. So much for our friendship. She didn’t think it wise to associate with the likes of me.

A telephone Distortion Campaign had been in the works for months, while maintaining a close friendship with me. Though I had never spoken on the phone with mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim (my boundary, not hers) she still managed to contact other people and give them the inside scoop.

If someone was my friend, they were targeted; including people I had known online for a couple of years. Suddenly, reality was upside-down and backwards with people going No Contact lest my predatory character ruin their lives. Imagine! Imagine this happening when the only crime you committed was being too trusting, too accommodating, and ignorant about pathological women because the only pathology you’d studied was based on narcissistic roosters.

If you've never encountered a character like this, my story might sound in-credible which is why I rarely write about the crazy people I’ve met in cyberspace. Enough years have passed and people have moved on so perhaps it’s safe to write from a distanced and anonymous position. I hope so.

Now, what do you do when you suddenly realize the person you called a friend is a meanie-weanie who has forged alliances with mutual friends who choose to believe her accusations? I don't know the answer to that but after two or three barnyard fights defending the character I’ve been working on for sixty years, I hope to prevent future pecking contests. I kinda like my tail feathers. The new feathery growth came back 'cute and curly', not straight as an arrow like it was before.

Smear campaigns pale in comparison to Distortion campaigns

What I experienced was a Distortion Campaign, similar to the Smear Campaign with an important caveat: with a distortion campaign, the projector believes her cognitive distortions are true. She displaces her animosity onto others, perceiving in a perverse way, that kind people are opportunists, liars, and backstabbing manipulators with mercenary hearts. In her mind, underneath the façade of compassion is a deceitful person planning an ambush as soon as everyone’s guards are down. “Just look at her apron!” she warns! “Don’t be fooled! That’s not a rolling pin. It’s a machine gun! Heads up everybody! I loooooooooooooooove you!!!”

The Distortion Campaign is defined by the insistent and persistent belief in one's perceptions being irrefutably true, despite contradictory evidence.

With a Smear Campaign, the malice is evident. It is conceived, contrived, and carried out as an intentional means to destroy a perceived opponent. A smear campaign may also be a way to 'level' the pecking order, far more schadenfreudistic than malicious.

But remember: Pathological personalities are unaware that their 'thinking' is distorted and therefore, a smear campaign may switch to a distortion campaign. The impact of this is that other people WILL BE bamboozled by the pathological's unabashed duplicity. The pathological person is so convinced their cognitive distortions are true, that other people are eventually persuaded by their emotionally-evocative sincerity.

Splitting

Only in the aftermath have I sorted out what happened and it behooves anyone in the support world to educate your self about projectionprojective identification, scapegoating, and splitting. You see, some people are prone to splitting reality. One day you’re their best friend and the next day you’re their evil enemy. When you tire of the emotional whiplash, they’ll turn on the charm. “Smooch!” You may believe they are reconciling, when in fact, they are hoovering: making sure you don't leave before they’ve gathered enough weapons to annihilate your feathered ass. When their psyche splits, forcing you to split (as in run the other direction), you will be accused of egregious wrongdoings---wrongdoings, which make no sense and have no valid basis in anyone’s reality other than the splitter’s. And neither you, nor a witness of angels will change their minds.

Pathological personalities are unaware of the deep fissure within themselves splitting reality into dark or light, bad or good, fertilizer or horseshit. In their perceptions of reality: You are horseshit until proven otherwise. And nothing you do will prove otherwise---your positive attributes will be twisted into evil things until you won’t even recognize yourself.

Oh, those KIND People!

As I wrote in my last article about Smear Campaigns, the honest person finds herself stuck between a rock and a hard place as to whether she ought defend herself or ignore the insanity. People believe what they want to believe and sometimes, they resist believing a nice person is as nice as she appears. They look for an angle, a hidden motive, and a reason to justify the hyper-vigilant feeling that everybody is out to get ‘em.

In the case of a pathological personality, other people are targeted to carry their projections rather than realizing they’re initiating the distortion campaign themselves. They honestly believe their distortions are true. Pathological personalities cannot understand people being kind without having underhanded motives. Why not? Because they suspect kindness to be a manipulative maneuver since manipulation is how they do life and thus assume everyone else does likewise.

On recovery forums though, some people are frightened of kindness, having had their tenderness trampled by a person they trusted. The next time around, they are too smart to fall for “The kindness tactic!” You aren’t gonna fool them by being nice!

What a sad state of affairs it is when kindness triggers fear, increasing defensive and offensive behavior.

The Distortion Campaign

While you're getting your bearings on what just happened, the police might show up at your door. Or the armed forces. Or a band of vigilantes seeking revenge because you were so vicious to mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim. She has convinced the troops you’re Darth Vadar, emperor of the Dark Side; maybe even persuading YOUR allies and friends that there is nothing redeemable about anything you've ever done. There is no ‘dusk’; no 'dawn' to your character...you are devoid of light like a soul-sucking soldier for Satan.

You will be treated like a pariah without any credible evidence whatsoever. Even by your so-called friends.

Need I reiterate that the pathological person’s accusations are convincing because SHE is convinced she is the epitome of lightness-and-truth, the victim of your darkness-and-lies. Take note of the splitting, the harsh judgments, the lack of integration for both good and bad in people, her desire to overcome evil with her empire of flying monkeys. She chants her siren call to fellow fowls, who rescue her the way they wish someone would have rescued them.

(There is no blame here for people’s reactions. We’re all learning about pathology. I include myself in the flying monkey brigade. It was a learning experience and maybe that’s the wisest thing I can say at this point: whatever you’ve done or had done to you, consider it a ‘learning process’ and seek meaning from the experience.)

Pathological characters defend cognitive distortions with vilifying lies, dissociations, destruction of your affiliations and bonds, accusations of mental illness, abuse, warning others about your online predation and calumny.

Where did I go wrong?

The flaw in my thinking was that people would know me well enough to laugh at such in-credible allegations. I assumed bystanders would tell the Damsel she was full of chicken shit and horse piss and she oughta find another barnyard to strut her stuff. I hoped people would give me the benefit of the doubt.

I believed and falsely, that logic would outweigh emotional reasoning.

It has taken years to recover from this Distortion Campaign. I can verify that when we have connected to a group, even in cyberspace, our emotional reactions to betrayal and mobbing are no different than had our next-door neighbors hung garlic on our front door or burned a cross in the front yard or any of the other things people do when they act on hatred. The good thing about cyberspace is that it’s much easier relocating your ‘home’ than it is moving an entire household.

Victim chicks will ALWAYS collect allies. Your friends, preferably. Watch for that in cyberspace. Hell, watch for it face-to-face.

When an angel who cannot fight the dark force without your help is recruiting you, please reach for the light switch in your brain and turn it on. I suffered the Distortion Campaign once; I don't want you to experience the same thing nor be caught up in a destructive cycle that leads to self-blame and excruciating chagrin.

It took awhile restoring my belief in the goodness of all God’s creatures including meanie-weanies. Fortunately, my belief in human kindness is so deeply embedded that not even a flock of chickens can rob my golden egg. I laid it with my own hard labor and I ain’t about to let anybody steal it out from under me. Not even a mean-chick-pretending-to-be-a-victim.

Blogduggery: Where Are You on the Plagiarism Spectrum?

So tell me my friends---what do you do when your articles are 'lifted' and the author didn't even bother adding your name, not even in the footnotes? You recognize your voice, yet there's no link to your article or your website, not even a shred of evidence you authored the article---and yet. And YET, their plagiarized article shoots up google rankings while your work can't be found with an Orion Starblast Astro Reflector Telescope! Oh the agony! Oh the humiliation when someone builds on your ideas with words you composed and metaphors you messed up, and patches together a better article than the wordy one you should have edited but couldn't 'cuz you were suffering ptsd; i.e.: long on words; short on memory.

I don't write for money so why would it matter if someone put their name on my work if they reached more people than myself? Why would their BlogDuggery sneak under my skin like a subDermal earwig, only to be exorcised with a review of my Mission "to help people". Helping People is the way my family rolls all the way back to great-grandparents who said life was about serving others and they lived by their beliefs. By now, my ancestral patterned behavior is so deeply ingrained that nothing short of a narcissism overdose could change the course of my life. That's okay. The world needs more caretakers, not fewer and that wisdom comes from a woman who's read a library of books about people pleasing and nice girls and the trap of codependency. And notwithstanding my grandparent's altruistic mentality, my desire to alleviate other people's suffering stems from receiving help when I was an awful mess myself---before learning about mental illness, family systems, personality disorders and half-price Sara Lee pound cake at the day-old bake store. I'm still a mess. But I'm an educated chubby mess.

What is BlogDuggery?
"BlogDuggery creates the appearance of authorship through intentional or unintentional appropriation of other people's ideas, words, and oftentimes crappy metaphors. Similar to  skullduggery, blogduggery insinuates trickery, dishonesty and deceitful behavior.
A caveat to the definition of BlogDuggery as a "failure of conscience", is the degree to which a suspect is suffering traumatic stress, thus interfering with prefontal executive brain functioning and the normal restraint of an unimpaired and healthy super-ego." ~excerpted from "How to Keep Your Blogging Friends as Allies" by CZBZ
The first time my work was plagiarized, it was a compliment because it meant something I had written was worthy of copy-and-paste. Recognition of my audacious attempts to write would have been lovely but when it didn't happen, I thought, "As long as the site helps people, what does my name matter?" I wasn't alarmed because I know how overwhelming it is when our lives become unmanageable and we search the Internet for answers. We find meaningful passages here and insightful excerpts there and copy people's quotes without attributions or links. I get it. I do. I have disorganized notes like that myself. So when a blogger omits my name, I contact the blogger via email and ask him or her to give me a little credit please and we can have coffee if ever they're in my city. I don't make a fuss because I have a keen eye for broad horizons, measuring situations by their relative irrelevance in the galactic scheme of everything temporal. If someone's traumatic experience was lessened by something I'd written, who cared if they remembered my name? I suppose it doesn't matter really. But for someone whose generosity was taken advantage of by an opportunistic narcissist well, this schmuck feels sad about blogging peers doing the same thing as rat bazturds. Why anyone who'd been abused, maligned, and mistreated, would feel entitled and justified to help themselves to other people's work, without even a thank you, baffles me.

I Am Guilty, Too

A few weeks ago, I posted about an image I had copied from a cooking blog. (You can read about it Here and also a little bit Here.) I'm on the spectrum. The difference between my BlogDuggery and pathological BlogDuggery is in the credits, though. I added a link to her blog and her name which in my perspective, was free advertisement. She didn't see it that way and since the photograph was her property, not mine, I deleted it without argument. So far, all of my websites/blogs are educative, not for profit or business but that's still spurious justification for copying articles. So yea, I have copy-and-pasted articles; however, I have never lifted whole portions of anyone's work, pretending to have written the article myself. And I don't like the "sleight of hand" some sites are doing now, cherry-picking people's quotes off forums and blogs, expecting that person to feel guilty asking for recognition and so these "quotable" people don't receive validation while the site or blog or book gets credit (and even financial compensation). Maybe people who've been in narcissistic relationships are extra-sensitive to being 'used' but I can tell you that it sure makes me feel pissy and I'm an easy-going personality.

Somewhere in our desire to contribute to the good of the whole, caring and compassionate folks are being taken advantage of---all in the name of altruism.

Still, 'anonymous quote collections' and copy-and-pasted articles-with-attribution are not as worrisome as Patchwork Plagiarism, a fairly new phenomenon in our Information Age. This is happening in our blogging community and it's dangerous because of the effect it has on non-professional bloggers who might silence themselves rather than have their talents and creativity appropriated AGAIN. Everyone loses when one person chooses to disrespect a peer's hard work.
"In her poem, "A Time of Bold Action," Edna St. Vincent Millay evokes an image of the overwhelming amount of data to which we are exposed every day, " . . . facts . . .lie unquestioned/Uncombined." Information is ". . . daily spun, but there exists no loom/To weave it into fabric" (Todd 2004)."
"In this Information Age, students produce research projects by piecing together passages quoted verbatim and stitched together with a few introductory or transitional words. They assemble research as patchwork quilts rather than weaving a fabric of new knowledge." ~Patchwork Plagiarism
Being Falsely Accused of Plagiarism

The truth is: I have been falsely charged of stealing intellectual property; i.e.: plagiarism. A shocking accusation to say the least since the allegations came from a woman considered to be a close friend and collaborator. After writing articles and sharing my ideas for our new website, she accused me of plagiarism, threatened me with a lawsuit, and proceeded to malign my character. Ever since then, I have shied away from writing poetry, fairy-tales, or any creative works she could even remotely perceive as her ideas (despite having written my 'stuff' on other websites before we even met). Her very scary and threatening emails insisted I had stolen her intellectual property and would be subject to legal reprimand if I dared write about Hansel and Gretel again. (The Brothers Grimm and Anderson might file a suit against fairy tale corruptions like my stories but I never heard from any of those guys or their publishers). The whole thing came down several years ago, maybe 2006-7 and it scared the bejeebers out of me.

I considered sending my dear friend a tin foil hat but decided against it 'cuz people would most likely believe her version of the truth, not mine. Some people are convincing story tellers. I'm uncomfortably realistic about my level of charisma, of which there is some but not enough to convince people I'm innocent, if that's NOT what they want to believe. And so our friendship tragedy continued, an intractable situation between accuser and schmuck played out over several years. She in her corner of cyberspace and me in the other, never writing anything that could in any conceivable way encroach on her designated turf and she never coming to her senses or contacting me again. Because we had a good-sized group of mutual friends, some believed me and some believed her and she got a lot of mileage out of calling me a plagiarist. (I also learned am learning that it's better to work with your wounded ego than engage in a she-said/she-said popularity charisma contest. She's not around anymore, which allows me to feel safe enough to write about about what happened.)

My experience being falsely accused of plagiarism, my recent encounter with the cooking blog image (guilty as charged), being threatened by a particular psychologist when her article was filed in our forum's resource section, and finding my work in an article stitched like a patchwork quilt, has heightened my awareness of the complexity of intellectual property, copyright law and plagiarism. However, with friends---with our blogging allies, plagiarism doesn't seem that complicated. Be Kind. Show Respect. Don't steal from your friends.

Yesterday, I was googling for articles about 'The Smear Campaign' since once again, your friendly schmuck is experiencing another round in the chicken coop because I can't get it through my thick-as-a-brick head, that some people enjoy destroying a good person's reputation. While I was reading a well-ranked article about the Distortion and Smear Campaign, certain passages sounded familiar. Sure enough, entire portions of my Chickens in Oz article had been lifted without attribution or credit. What really fowled up my mood was that the 'funny stuff', the personally odd and quirky stuff, is what was lifted...picking through my metaphors adding levity to an otherwise serious article. I am not in the least bit interested in legal action, nor would I send a bully threat the likes of which I've received. Still, it's my responsibility to stand up for the integrity of my work even if I was writing about barnyards. How hard would it be to add quotations marks and a link?

Keep our Community Healthy and Open

What disturbs me is that excellent writers have so much to offer other people in our efforts to educate the public about pathology. But when people steal their work and claim it as their own, people are naturally reluctant to share. Appropriating someone else's work without due respect, diminishes the quality of our community, potentially reducing the numbers of non-professional articles people like myself are willing to write. It's one thing to read a psychologist's psychoanalytic paper on the etiology of NPD and those articles are not only necessary but fundamental to understanding pathology; but for the majority of autodidacts (a fancy word for "self-taught"), we want REAL experiences. The Real Deal. The nitty-gritty down-and-hideous dysfunctional grind detailing sociopathic parents, pathological siblings, narcissistic bosses, and rat bazturd x-husbands.

How Can I Stop Myself From Committing BlogDuggery?

1) Inform yourself about plagiarism. There's no excuse for ignorance: A Primer on Plagiarism

2) If you want to use an article, ask the blogger first. Post his or her article, quote, or excerpt later

2) Include the author's name and when available: a link to their site, books, and/or biography

3) Use quotation marks when posting cut-and-paste phrases or paragraphs in your article

4) Add a Resource section to your blog and list your sources

5) If using a peer's ideas extensively, add a link to their blog on your sidebar. Don't feign innocence by pretending you've never heard of them when obviously, you have

6) SEE your fellow bloggers. Honor them. They care enough to make your life better

7) Acknowledge your fellow bloggers for trusting YOU enough to freely share their work

8) Plagiarism silences people who've been taken for granted. Restore their belief in a trustworthy world. Don't Steal Their Work

9) If your work was lifted, be kind when first contacting the "suspect". If they ignore your requests or refuse to remove your work from their site, then you might use a legal dictionary and write a nasty letter. Most of the time, people are extremely apologetic so don't go overboard punishing them

10) Never assume you know a co-collaborator you haven't met face-to-face  ;-P

Autodidact is a word my good friend Caliban's Sister taught me. She's always teaching me words with three syllable or more. She's a conscientious credit-giver and she knows how it feels to be plagiarized.

Plagiarism Is Not a Big Moral Deal by Stanley Fish. The New York Times. "Very young children do not distinguish between themselves and the world; they assume that everything belongs to them; only in time and through the conditioning of experience do they learn the distinction between mine and thine and so come to acquire the concept of stealing. The concept of plagiarism, however,  is learned in  more specialized contexts of practice entered into only by a  few; it’s hard to get from the notion that you shouldn’t appropriate your neighbor’s car to the notion that you should not repeat his words without citing him."

Wikipedia: Plagiarism "the use of the Latin word plagiarius (literally kidnapper), to denote someone stealing someone else's work, was pioneered by Roman poet Martial, who complained that another poet had "kidnapped his verses." This use of the word was introduced into English in 1601 by dramatist Ben Jonson, to describe as a plagiary someone guilty of literary theft."
